"No soy de aquí ni soy de allá", "I am neither from here nor there". This painting is of the artist's stoops and street in Reservoir Hill, Baltimore. Added elements include a toucan, clay like sidewalks, African acacia trees and birds of paradise plant. The Mayan glyphs on the marble stoops reads "West Baltimore Blessings".

Companion Spirits

Curious, playful Red-lored Amazon parrots are perched on a street sign in southeast Baltimore across the street from a predominately Latino elementary school. The colors found on the parrots are found in the street signs - a perfect blend and sense of belonging. The Mayan glyph for "companion spirit" is within the crosswalk sign and is pronounced "way". It's the artist's play on the English and Mayan language for right of way and companion spirit.

Quetzales

The Quetzal is found throughout Central America. It is sacred to the Maya and Tenochca peoples and inspired by artist's shared indigenous ancestry with the Central American and Mexican community. These three quetzals are perched on a historic water fountain found in Patterson Park, Baltimore. The Quetzal's feathers are acting like water pouring out from the dry fountain, symbolic for an abundance for or overflow of life.

El Patterson

In accompaniment with "El Espiritu de la Gente", "El Patterson" depicts the same three scarlet macaws on top of the Patterson theater located in a diverse Central American community in Highlandtown, Baltimore. The third macaw is the viewer of the piece joining it's flock on the marquee.

Divinely

Both divinely feminine and masculine. This piece was a trade with my Nicanahuac sister, healer and medicine worker. I want to thank the universe for bringing us together. The bird wings and tail belongs to the Guardabarranco bird indigenous to Mesoamerica and in which we share a connection with. Also depicted is the gift and continued blessings of our ancestors, food and medicine we grow and consume today, Corn. I made this in a time of transition, growth and healing, and with my sister in mind. Look upon our divine mother, before linear time, find yourself in your truest form.

This painting features typical architecture found in the Highlandtown neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. Parrots, Central American pottery, and a Royal Poinciana tree are incorporated as a form of magical realism. The artist blends the beauty of two seemingly different worlds into a new reality.

Alchemy of Joy

This collaborative project between Jessy DeSantis, Harold D. Morales, and Jinji’s Chocolate explores the Maya roots of cacao practices with a focus on celebrating our relationships with land and ancestors. The project grows from previous collaborations between Jessy and Harold, including on a Popul Vuh reading group that was a part of Morgan’s Center for Religion and Cities' work to Indigenize the Baltimore City Curriculum.
